Paris Can Can
Paris is certainly one of the most vibrant and visually exciting cities in the world. Pigalle lights up to the sights and sounds of shows like Moulin Rouge, Lido and the legendary Folies. If you combined the magnificent paintings of Toulouse-Lautrac and the swirling music of Offenbach, you would probably come up with the rich pot pourri that is the wonderful production. This is a well researched and lovingly assembled show, resplendent with all matters associated with the French capital. There is an homage to Edith Piaf with skilful renditions of classic songs like La Vie En Rose and the production team of Jeffrey B. Moss and Patrice Marques have captured a unique fusion of the traditional and contemporary. Thus we witness the beauty and athletic agility of the dancers alongside modern music by Shaggy. The dancing has to be seen to be believed, both male and female dancers give their all. The swirling petticoats and feather boas aside, there were excellent variety acts to warm the heart on a freezing Nottingham night. Louise Taylor and William Solkice defied gravity in an aerial ballet. The stunning juggling of Paul Ponce almost stole the show alongside a plate spinning act which had the audience on the edges of their seats. The American in Paris tribute included a nod towards Cyd Charisse and Gene Kelly and you got the feeling that the old hoofer would smile generously down on this talented ensemble. The sheer athleticism and unadulterated exuberance held us all in thrall and I hope the company return to Nottingham. This makes Riverdance look like a canal, totally brilliant !
